Surfer-SEO

Know what your competition is doing!

When you know what your competition is doing on page 1, you know what you need to do. Try to compete with their on-page before you start competing with your off-page.

Why?

Because you can get results quicker and cheaper with on-page SEO.

Data drive SEO

Why is the team behind Surfer SEO and me, as an SEO, so crazy about data-driven SEO?

Simply because you want to invest in the right sources with the right strategy to let this work.

It’s foolish to start building out a website without a clear goal. It’s like changing a car’s tires when the engine is broken. You don’t need to build anything new if you have no idea what the goals are.

Oh, you may say: I do data-driven SEO because I follow all the suggestions my WordPress SEO plugin tells me to do.

Ah. Do you think that is based upon data? Please keep in mind that there is no ‘golden rule’ for all keywords. One of the most important things I learned and that resonates daily, is that you rank according to your competitors, and not according to a bunch of preset numbers.

How about a free building plan?

What if I told you, that you can actually receive a building plan for the page you want to create?

It’s right in front of you! Really!

If you want to rank on page 1, you better build a page that is able to compete with the other pages on page 1. Keep in mind that Google is still a computer, not a person. It’s a huge calculator.

Check your competitors’ on-page for the following:

  1. The number of words on their pages
  2. What words are used most often
  3. How many bolded terms do they use
  4. Do they use images, and do they optimize them with Alt Tags
  5. How often does the keyword appear in the text
  6. Where does the keyword appear in the headings?
  7. What is the title?
  8. What does their Meta Description look like?
  9. How many backlinks does the page have?

Do that for all 10 of your competitors on page 1 in the search results and you have a good idea of what you need to do to be competitive.

But wait.

Isn’t that going to take ages? Yep!

Why wouldn’t you let a tool take care of that?

Try Surfer SEO

Surfer SEO does all the hard work for you! The tool looks at dozens and dozens of different on-page factors. It correlates the rankings for that given search query to see what factors correlate strongest.

All you have to do next is to convert that data into a new article.

How to use Surfer SEO?

After you run Surfer you’ll get a list of factors that correlate and which don’t. Start with checking the factors that correlate strongest and go from there.

If Surfer hows you that the average word count on page 1 in the search results is 3000, and you are currently on page 4 with just 700 words, you know that you need to add more content, and how much!

If it tells you that your competition is using the keyword 30 times on their page, and you only used it 3 times, that would give you another optimization plan.

Average Word Count for page 1

With all the data Surfer provides, you will know how much work, effort, or even money for a content writer you need to invest to compete with the page 1 search results. A very powerful tool inside Surfer is the Audit tool, which summarizes all the factors you need to improve on. Now you are good to go!

Before you start optimizing, read these tips:

  1. Always check your competitor’s web pages! Surfer SEO will only measure, you still need to understand how to implement and understand the data. Looking at the pages can help you understand reading the data.
  2. Use the new Content Editor to produce content before it is even online!
  3. Run the tool before you start writing a page. That way you know what to expect. You could go after another keyword if the one you wanted to go after needs too much content.
  4. Run the tool multiple times during the optimization process.
  5. Compare the data with other tools, like Page Optimizer Pro or Cora SEO.
  6. Check off-page metrics using tools like Ahrefs, SEMrush, Moz, Majestic etc. Since you need to compete with the pages on page 1, you better know if they have a large number of keywords or not.
  7. When you are reaching page 1, slow it down. Don’t make too many changes at once! If there is a drop, you wouldn’t know what caused it.
